Disobedience Day July 3rd

Breaking the rules!

July the 3rd is Disobedience Day. I accidently came across this awareness day whilst my daughter was searching Daysoftheyear.com. She was more interested in Waffle Day however Disobedience Day caught my eye.

Disobedience Day was created by people who were fed up with always being told what to do. Demands in life have us following rule after rule and these can be a good thing keeping us stable. However, have you ever found yourself sitting in the same place when you go to a meeting or a group? I deliberately change places if I go somewhere on a regular basis and I really like the ethos of Disobedience Day! It is about law-abiding people letting loose and doing something different for a change.

Are you disobedient?

Recently I have been questioning my obedience. My son is a handful and my mum keeps saying “you were just like that”. Hmmm. I have know for a long time that some rules for me just have to be broken. For a while in my early 20’s I worked in the Police service where I saw ways of working blindly followed just because the always had been. My urge was to constantly want to find new and better ways of doing things and my enthusiasm for change was met with hostility. This angered me and also sent me spiralling into deep depression. Thankfully being self employed teaching music I can find the best rules for me and change them if necessary. This keeps me learning, active and enthusiastic about teaching.

Being a rule breaker is no bad thing. We need to change to evolve and adapt and hopefully become better people with better ways of being.

Change your routine

For one day (and you can do it other days too if you get the bug) Disobedience Day is saying make a change! Do something different. Could you cycle to work instead of going in the car? Take up a new activity that you have never done before like belly dancing or yoga? Try singing or something arty or a different way of working. Or just sit somewhere different for a change!

A few weeks ago I decided that one Friday after school we would go for a walk in the woods nearby. Normally on a Friday we all arrive home (completely exhausted) and chill out. No more working (that is hard when you are self-employed), we have tea, put the washing on and watch TV. This particularly Friday I fancied a change and despite the groans and the 20 minute sit in traffic we actually got to the local woods. Do you know what? It was great! We walked, had fun playing on a rope swing, fresh air and time to talk to each other. It was about 6.30pm when we decided we were hungry and ordered a Chinese takeaway! It broke up our routine which was a breath of fresh air!

A little disobedience never hurt anyone, so take advantage of Disobedience day and live a little! Find out more here

Enjoy your day and let me know what you change!
